Jim McGuinness is not a man prone to shooting himself in the foot, so why would he be gung-ho for a League title a week out from Donegal's Ulster Championship opener against Derry? For the integrity of the 'best' competition in football!
So, the League is Gaelic football’s best competition and Jim McGuinness should respect that by going all out to win it.
McGuinness is in a far better position to judge what is best for his team than some of his critics who insist he should go gung-ho at every game. He is entitled to do exactly what he wants. Look what happened to Mayo two years ago. They won the League final against Galway and the following weekend were sent packing in the first round of the Connacht Championship by Roscommon.
Donegal, who are safe in Division 1 after beating Derry last weekend, could well rest players when Tyrone come to Letterkenny this Sunday - although there were no games last week so they may not. Logistically, it would be a huge ask for Galway, currently top of the table, to play a League final at Croke Park one weekend and head Stateside for a game in a new competition seven days later.
At the opposite end of the scale, you have Kerry and Dublin - the system always seems to work for them - who would be pleased with the extra big game a League final provides. Robbie Brennan in Meath will have a big eye on the schedule. Meath may well want promotion, but not necessarily a League final - but it’s not an either/or - as they’re out seven days later against Carlow in the Leinster Championship.
