Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan insists that most people would perceive Stoneybatter as a safe place, even after alleged incidents on Sunday. He defended his previous comments stating that some areas of Dublin are unsafe at certain times, sparking debate in the Dáil.

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan has said that most people would have believed “ Stoneybatter on a Sunday afternoon was a safe place”.

The accused was charged with possession of a box cutter knife at Murtagh Road, possession of scissors on Manor Place - and two charges of assault causing harm to two named individuals on Oxmanstown Road and Niall Street. Mr Gannon accused him of becoming “commentator-in-chief”. He said: “How long do those parts of Dublin have to remain unsafe? What exactly does the Government intend to do to increase not only perceptions of safety in our city but actual safety?”

He said: “I was asked a straight question and I gave a straight answer. Before I was appointed as Minister for Justice I was asked whether parts of Dublin were unsafe at certain times and I said they were. I will not change my answer simply because it is convenient to me.
