The former human rights lawyer and DPP is riding high after success in recent by-elections and looks set to become the next prime minister – unless the Tories stage a comeback

Earlier this month, Keir Starmer found himself sharing the spotlight with another Keir: Keir Mather.

The latter had just provided Britain’s Labour Party with its biggest ever by-election victory, overturning a 20,000 Conservative majority in the North Yorkshire constituency of Selby and Ainsty. On a day when three by-elections were held in Britain, the Labour Party fell just short of also winning Boris Johnson’s old seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip.
