Labour and the Tories are strikingly similar on the NHS – just look at their embrace of the private sector

It is an irritating claim to those of us who spend our lives in the Westminster bubble because we think we can see the differences so clearly. Sometimes, though, it is even more irritating because it is true. Yesterday in the House of Commons, the Health Secretary, Steve Barclay, mocked Labour for being “busy announcing initiatives we already have under way”.

In fairness to Barclay, in the intervening years patient choice has faded significantly. It went from about half of patients saying they were offered a choice of treatment location in 2009, to just one in 10 exercising that choice today.
