This article details Laura Fox's unconventional journey to becoming a prominent figure in RTE, highlighting her early experiences in local radio, her success in beauty pageants, and her strategic use of social media to build connections and launch her media career.

Laura Fox is a prominent figure in RTE, hosting a popular weekday show on 2fm and the prime time TV program, Ireland’s Fittest Family. However, her journey to success wasn’t conventional. In an interview with RSVP Magazine, the Galway native explained that she never felt the need to pursue higher education. Instead, she began her career at her local radio station, Galway FM. Laura emphasized the value of local radio, stating, “I started in Galway Bay FM.

I loved radio and was always looking for the next step. I say it all the time, ‘Don’t pass up your local radio station’. It will teach you so much”. When asked about her educational background in broadcast journalism, Laura clarified, “Absolutely not”. She elaborated, “College wasn’t for me. It just wasn’t something that was in my path at all”. Laura shared her various experiences before finding her footing in media, including working in London bars and considering a move to Australia like many others. However, her life took an unexpected turn when she won Miss Galway and subsequently Miss Sunday World. These pageants provided her with valuable connections and exposure in the media industry, especially through her burgeoning presence on Instagram, a relatively new social media platform at the time.Laura explained that during this period, networking was primarily reliant on personal connections, and she lacked those in the Dublin media scene. To bridge this gap, she moved to Dublin and enrolled in a part-time journalism course, seeking a reason to establish herself in the city. Simultaneously, she leveraged her growing Instagram expertise to manage social media accounts for brands, earning enough to cover her living expenses. A pivotal moment arrived during a photoshoot where she met a photographer who connected her with someone in the digital department of 2fm. Laura seized this opportunity, emphasizing the importance of taking risks and pursuing her goals.Laura acknowledges that her path wasn't traditional but believes a degree alone isn't a guarantee of success in the media industry. She asserts that having “it” – a certain charisma and drive – is essential, and one only discovers this through experience and experimentation. Laura encourages aspiring media professionals to explore opportunities, learn from their experiences, and ultimately find their own unique path to success
