Leo Varadkar has officially resigned as Taoiseach of Ireland. He arrived at the official residence of Irish president Michael D Higgins to hand in his letter of resignation. Varadkar had previously announced his resignation as Fine Gael leader and will remain as Taoiseach in a caretaker capacity until a new Taoiseach is voted in.

Mr Varadkar arrived at the official residence of Irish president Michael D Higgins, Áras an Uachtarain, at 5.55pm on Monday.
