The defender put in a strong performance as his side achieved derby day bragging rights.

The Irishman was described as “a warrior” by the manager after a superb display against Rangers secured a 1-0 win at Ibrox. Stopper Scales admirably answered the emergency call with injuries ruling out Cameron Carter-Vickers, Maik Nawrocki and Stephen Welsh. New loan signing Nat Phillips was also unavailable for Celts as 25-year-old Scales put his body on the line to secure the clean sheet. Now he’s determined to maintain his high performance levels to try to cement a long-term spot in the side.

“I’ve only played a handful of games for Celtic and I had to go out on loan to gain experience last season. To be back here now and get into the team, there have been a couple of injuries that have helped that... it’s a chance I have to take. Scales deserved high praise from his boss and admits the manager’s faith offered a big pre-game boost. The Irishman added: “He trusts me and how I can play. I have had a full pre-season to get used to the style of play, so that was it – just go in and play my game.

As well as fighting for opportunities with the Hoops, Scales also hopes to force his way back into the Republic of Ireland international set-up. Despite six Under-21 caps, he’s not played for the seniors and isn’t in Stephen Kenny’s squad for Euro qualifiers against France and the Dutch during this break.
