59 candidates competing for 28 seats
Among those standing aside are Fianna Fáil’s Cllr PJ Flynn, the county’s longest serving politician who has been elected nine times since 1974, and Cllr Johnny Flynn of Fine Gael, separate blows for two parties that have long dominated the council. Fianna Fáil won 13 seats in 2019 and Fine Gael took eight.
Sinn Féin will be hoping to capitalise on the 15 per cent first preference vote its since departed candidate, Violet Anne Wynne, secured in the 2020 general election. Wynne is now an Independent TD. The party has only one incumbent on the council, Cllr Donna McGettigan, but it is running a candidate in each of the five electoral areas.
The council has long been a male-dominated arena, with only five female outgoing councillors, but could increase with 16 female candidates competing this time, up from 10 in 2019.Former Fine Gael senator Tony Mulcahy is seeking a return to local politics in the Shannon electoral area after a gap of 13 years.
Inch, near Ennis, was an early flashpoint in the national controversy concerning accommodating asylum seekers but candidates say that the issue is not featuring on the doorsteps. Council plans to regenerate parts of Ennis through its “Ennis 2040″ strategy have been a source of controversy in recent months and councillors who backed the plan could take a hit.
