Local elections 2024: Among the issues being raised by voters are a shortage of school places, difficulties accessing GPs, speeding drivers in estates and the state of roads and footpaths.
Fine Gael was the biggest party here after 2019′s elections, taking nine seats spread evenly across the three districts. Fianna Fáil won six and Independents took three.Three councillors are not seeking re-election with Gerry Warnock and John Brown stepping down in Longford and PJ Reilly not seeking to be returned in Granard. Warnock intends to contest the next general election.
. Other matters being raised include a shortage of school places, difficulties accessing GPs, speeding drivers in estates and the state of roads and footpaths. An effective embargo on recruitment to the HSE is a concern in the Longford electoral area, with some fearing this will result in young workers emigrating and staff dealing with large workloads looking for opportunities elsewhere.
