M6, M65, M66, A590 and A56 delays all week as maintenance work starts
North West motorways and A-roads are set for another busy week with planned maintenance work and temporary lower speed limits making journeys that little bit longer.
"We're looking at ways to increase capacity and improve connections, from the northern gateway to the Pennines. Jobs and businesses rely on our roads to keep the local economy running, whether through ports in Merseyside and Lancashire or keeping shop shelves stocked in Stockport. Innovation has played a key part of the region’s history since the Preston Bypass, the UK's first motorway.
During the same period, overnight restrictions will be in place, which will result in either the full or partial closure of the M6 Southbound carriageway. When full closures are required, a fully signed diversion route will be in place using the A6 from M6 J33 before re-joining the motorway network at M55 .
"These essential repairs will enable our customers to get from A to B safely and reliably," National Highways says. Work started on October 17 and will be finished by February 2023. Work started on October 5 and will last until mid-November. This will take place between the hours of 8pm and 6am, and will be carried out in phases. As our work is subject to weather conditions, dates and planned closures may be cancelled at short notice.M6: Thelwall Viaduct bridge Work began in early October to resurface the motorway over the M6 Thelwall Viaduct bridge, and the access and exit slip roads at junction 21 of the M6.
