An Irish man in his fifties has been arrested in Dublin on suspicion of human trafficking offenses. The arrest is part of an ongoing international investigation focusing on human trafficking for labor exploitation. Gardaí, Ireland 's national police force, attached to the Garda National Protective Services Bureau made the arrest on Thursday morning in North County Dublin.
The 55-year-old man is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda Station in North Dublin. In a statement, a Garda spokesperson urged anyone who may be a victim of human trafficking for sexual or labor exploitation to come forward and speak with authorities. They can contact their local Garda Station or call the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111. The spokesperson also appealed to anyone with information about these crimes or suspects to come forward. The Gardaí emphasized that investigations are ongoing.People trafficked for labor exploitation are typically, but not exclusively, made to work in sectors like agriculture, construction, entertainment, service industry, manufacturing, and domestic servitude, as well as begging. Human trafficking involves the recruitment, movement, harboring, or receiving of a person through means such as fear, fraud, and deception, coercion, force, or the abuse of power or a position of vulnerability. This exploitation can be for sexual purposes, forced labor, criminal activity, or the removal of organs. In 2008, the Minister for Justice and Law Reform, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D., alongside then Commissioner of An Garda Síochána, Mr. Fachtna Murphy, launched a campaign to raise awareness about the trafficking of human beings. This campaign, known as the 'Blue Blindfold,' encourages people to not turn a blind eye to human trafficking. The blue blindfold symbolizes the lack of awareness among the public about this issue. The campaign aims to educate the public about human trafficking, discourage demand for the services of victims, and help establish the extent of human trafficking in Ireland. The 'Blue Blindfold' website encourages people to report suspicions related to prostitution, brothels, and potential victims of human trafficking. All emails are treated anonymously and with strict confidentiality
