Wayne Roche appeared before Wexford District Court charged with the murder of John O'Connor on December 31.
A 34-year-old man, Wayne Roche, formerly of Dominic Place, Waterford, and currently of no fixed address, appeared before a special sitting of Wexford District Court charged with murder following a fatal assault in New Ross , Co Wexford . Roche was charged with the murder of John O'Connor at his home in Cluain Fada, New Ross , Co Wexford on December 31, under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. Detective Garda Conor Walsh gave evidence of arresting the accused at 2pm today.
He told the court that he arrested the accused and cautioned him in relation to the charge, to which the accused replied: 'I didn't murder anyone.' Judge John O'Leary said that, as he had no jurisdiction to grant bail given the seriousness of the charge, he would grant the application for a remand in custody. Donna Kelly, defence barrister, said she would make an application for free legal aid as the accused is unemployed. Judge O'Leary said he would grant the application. Ms Kelly also asked the court to include in the order for the prison governor to provide medical assistance to the accused as required. Judge O'Leary said he would make the provision as part of the custody. The defendant sat in court, wearing a brown jumper, flanked by a garda during the brief hearing.
