Brian McHugh (40) has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Lisa Thompson (52) at her home in Ballymun, Dublin on May 9th, 2022. The prosecution alleges that McHugh killed Ms. Thompson, who was found with multiple stab wounds and a window blind cord wrapped around her neck, and will present CCTV footage and DNA evidence linking him to the crime.
The body of Lisa Thompson, a mother of two, was discovered at her home in Sandyhill Gardens, Ballymun , Dublin 11 on May 9th, 2022. She sustained multiple stab wounds to the chest, a bloody mouth and nose, and a window blind cord was wrapped tightly around her neck. Brian McHugh (40), with an address at Cairn Court, Poppintree, Ballymun in Dublin 11, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Ms. Thompson at the Central Criminal Court.
Opening the prosecution's case, Fiona Murphy SC, for the Director of Public Prosecutions, outlined that the court would hear evidence from Rachel Barton, a neighbor who reported hearing loud banging around 2 am on May 9th. Ms. Barton claimed she witnessed a man in Ms. Thompson's back garden, placing three bags into a dark green jeep before driving towards the main road. Damien Geraghty discovered Ms. Thompson's remains inside her home around 3 pm that afternoon. Another neighbor contacted emergency services who confirmed Ms. Thompson's death. Gardaí noted the rear door of the property was unlocked while the front remained locked. The upstairs bedroom was ransacked, but there was no sign of forced entry. Two knives were missing from a block in the kitchen. Dr. Linda Mulligan, a pathologist, will testify that Ms. Thompson's death resulted from a combination of ligature strangulation causing asphyxia and multiple stab wounds to the left side of her chest. Forensic analysis of the blind cord revealed a mixed DNA profile, excluding neither Ms. Thompson nor Mr. McHugh as contributors. The prosecution will present CCTV footage showing Ms. Thompson's Hyundai Tucson arriving at a laneway in Sandyhill Gardens on the night in question. A male, identified by a garda as Mr. McHugh, exits the vehicle and approaches Ms. Thompson's front door at 1:30 am. A light is seen turning on inside. At 2:50 am, a man believed to be the accused is captured leaving the property, carrying something in his hands, and entering the waiting Tucson. The car drives to an Applegreen service station in Finglas, where identification evidence will be presented linking Mr. McHugh and the named woman to the vehicle. A parking ticket for the Clayton Hotel was found in the Tucson, along with a jewelry valuation certificate linked to Ms. Thompson and bearing Mr. McHugh's fingerprints. The trial continues tomorrow before Ms. Justice Karen O'Connor and a jury of eight men and four women. It is expected to last three weeks
