The Hustle stars talks about playing an unsmiling detective in Van der Valk, relearning to ride a bike, his canine co-star, and being happy in his own company

James is a feature writer for The I paper and inews.co.uk. He was previously a feature writer and an associate feature editor on The Independent.likes to meditate. He also enjoys Wim Hof’s “Iceman” regime of chilly relaxation, which begins with a cold shower first thing every morning. But his great passion is playing the guitar. Is he the new Keith Richards, then? “No. I wouldn’t say I’m gifted. I always say I can play enough to impress somebody for about five minutes.

Warren has charisma to burn. He can light up a room like a set of indoor fireworks. He delivered a spell-binding performance, for instance, as a malign sprite in BBC1’s 2015 adaptation of. And he brought the same snap, crackle and pop to the part of con artist Danny Blue in, which ran for eight series on BBC1 between 2004 and 2012. The actor’s sheer magnetism made you forget that most of what Danny got up to was pretty reprehensible. Whatever the role, Warren exudes a sparky force field.

This may be one reason why the detective is never seen cracking a smile. “It’s always good to have a bit of fun, but I’m not very good at smiling,” says Warren, who is already out in Amsterdam shooting the third season of the show, “and I’m not sure I can warrant doing that as Van der Valk. Maybe in the last hour of the last day, I might come up with a gag!”

Breaking the ancient thespian code that you should never work with children or animals, Warren loves doing scenes with Trojan, the retired police dog who belongs to Julia Dahlman , Van der Valk’s commanding officer. Intriguingly, in a world which places so much importance on being in a couple, he is perfectly happy with his own company. In that, he sees many similarities with Van der Valk. “He is very interested in leading that solitary life. I can relate to that, as I spend most of my life as a real loner.”
