Marian Finucane saved thousands of children in South Africa, says Melanie Verwoerd
Thousands of children and young people in South Africa are still alive as a result of late broadcaster Marian Finucane’s charity work, her close friend revealed today.
She said: “She didn’t just want to do the touristy sites she asked could I arrange for her to stay a night in a shack in the township which nobody did at that stage. She had been absent from radio waves in recent weeks but was due to return to her usual slot tomorrow. Tubridy said her death brought “unimaginable sadness” for her husband John and her son Jack as well as her radio programme team “who all loved her” and for her loyal listeners, describing her as an “extraordinary person”.
Tom McGuire, Head of RTE Radio One, also paid tribute to his colleague who he hailed for her hard work and well-rounded knowledge of current affairs. “The call was repeated sometime after half past three and her dear husband John answered Marian’s phone and we discovered that Marian had died in her sleep. It’s just still unbelievable."Her depth of knowledge of national, international and world affairs, of culture and society, was beyond anyone else’s.”
