Money expert Martin Lewis is urging parents to check whether they are eligible for school uniform grants as the countdown to the new academic year begins
As the new school term approaches, UK parents are being urged to check if they're eligible for school uniform grants that could ease the financial burden by up to £200, amidst the escalating cost of living crisis.
According to the Schoolwear Association, the average cost for essential secondary school uniform and sportswear items for a child starting secondary school in England in 2024 is estimated at £99.83 each. With household budgets being squeezed by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, these grants could provide significant relief.
"I'd urge all parents to check what support is on offer in their local area, as the deadlines for applications are fast approaching." To qualify for the grants, parents are usually required to be claiming free school meals, certain benefits or have a low household income. Some councils also consider the age of the child when determining the grant amount.
