With Marvel’s Skrulls busy building a new galactic empire with the Kree, who are the villains behind the upcoming new Secret Invasion miniseries? It might be a forgotten group from Marvel's past.
A new Secret Invasion storyline was recently announced by Marvel Comics, as the follow-up to the popular 2008 event that saw the shapeshifting alien race of the Skrulls attempt a takeover of Earth by impersonating a number of superheroes. However, according to the few details shared on the upcoming miniseries by writer Ryan North, it is entirely possible that this new Secret Invasion will not be perpetrated by the Skrulls.
In the 2008 storyline, Nick Fury found out about the Skrull's plan a long time before they could bring it to fruition. Not knowing who he could trust or how deep the infiltration had already gone, he went underground and assembled a covert team of young heroes, the Secret Warriors, to prepare for the inevitable alien attack. When the superhero community found out about the plan, it was already too late.
Again, the interview released to IGN offers clues. It doesn't appear that the Secret Warriors will come back for this sequel, but North teased that"there is a bit of a revival of a different team – this one from the 90s – that we haven't seen in a while." In 1995, Marvel published a miniseries penned by Mark Millar and Grant Morrison, called Skrull Kill Krew.
These words could mean that"evil" humans are infiltrating governments and power structures using Skrull-like shapeshifting powers. That's why stopping them will be a job for Nick Fury and Maria Hill, two former S.H.I.E.L.D. directors who will be the main characters of the story, and it's more an espionage story rather than an all-out superhero smash fest.
