RTE broadcaster Maura Derrane has opened up about the reaction to becoming a mum in her 40s, her bond with her son Cal and how she would have liked to have more children

"My son is now 10. I found hilarious.
"It’s now that I say I would like to have had more kids. At the time I didn’t, I just never felt ready then. But I can’t imagine not having Cal.""He’s amazing and he’s the most important thing that’s ever happened to me in my life," she said. "He rules the roost and I’m his servant. I am the most Irish mammy that has ever been born. We’re friends, I don’t know if that is good? He calls me Maura.
While Cal is an only child, Maura thinks it's better to have more than one, as she said: "I think it’s better to have more than one child. And I can say that now. I never would judge anyone else for having one child, like me. But I think long term as a parent it’s easier if you have more than one kid."
Maura and John tied the knot back in 2005, and she recalled that she felt "too young" to get married. "Even when I got married in my mid-30s, I was like, ‘this is ridiculous, I’m far too young’," she said. "I met my husband around 2002, when I was working as a crime correspondent. I met him at a Fine Gael drinks thing. I wasn’t a very settling person then, in my early 30s."
