Sean Mag Uidhir and Caolan McGinley resigned as Sinn Fein press officers on Saturday, days after it emerged that they had given references for former colleague, Michael McMonagle, for a job at a charity in 2022

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has been urged to make a statement in the Dáil about references being provided to a party worker under investigation for child sex offences.

Sinn Féin has said the references were provided without clearance from the party and described the press officers’ actions as "unacceptable and wrong". Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys said, "They have been elected, the same as us". The Taoiseach added: "You want to silence them." After an initial back-and-forth, the Taoiseach responded: "You’ll understand, Ceann Comhairle, why I’m finding it hard to take a moralistic lecture on child protection from the leader of the opposition, today of all days.

The Taoiseach was also asked about the Sinn Féin references at an early morning press conference on Wednesday and he said he did not want to "play politics with this".
