Substitute Johnny McGroddy scores four points, including the crucial equalizer that forces extra-time, as DCU defeat Ulster University to reach the Sigerson Cup final.
Substitute Johnny McGroddy proved to be the hero for DCU as they overcame defending champions Ulster University after extra-time to advance to the Sigerson Cup final. McGroddy, introduced with eight minutes remaining in normal time, scored the crucial point that forced extra-time and then added three more in the additional 20 minutes. Darragh Swords, Alex Gavin, and captain Ciaran Caulfield also found the target in extra-time to secure a 0-14 to 0-10 victory for DCU .
This sets up a Dublin derby clash with UCD in next Wednesday's final, hosted by the University of Galway at the Connacht Centre of Excellence. DCU's progress wasn't straightforward. They faced a well-drilled and defensively sound Ulster University side that initially dominated the game, racing into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead. However, DCU gradually found their rhythm, reeling off four points in quick succession to level the score. Despite the efforts of both teams, the first half ended with Ulster University holding a narrow 0-6 to 0-5 advantage. The second half saw a tense back-and-forth battle with both sides struggling to create clear scoring opportunities. DCU's Luke Marren converted a free to tie the game at 0-6 apiece, and they again leveled at 0-7 each. Even the introduction of Dublin star Lorcan O'Dell, who had scored in their previous match, couldn't inspire DCU to take control. The game remained deadlocked at 0-8 each until McGroddy's late intervention forced extra-time. Ulster University, who had held possession for over four minutes at the end of normal time in an attempt to secure a winning score, couldn't find a way through. McGroddy's brilliance in extra-time proved decisive for DCU, while Ulster University suffered a late blow when Eoin McElholm received a red card for a high challenge on Gavin.
