“It’s funny because part of the premise of the book is that we’re prudish in Ireland when it comes to talking about sex, and yet I am that, 100%. But I’ve written it”
After years of toying with the idea of writing a steamy romance novel, 52-year-old mum of one Jillian Stout finally let go of self-doubt and the fear of having family read her “embarrassing” erotic fantasies to write her debut novel ‘The Love Lab’.

“That would often stop me from writing. Then came the fear of actually showing it to somebody and them saying, ‘this is a load of crap’.” “I think if I knew from the beginning how much work is involved in publishing a book I never would have started. But I took it each step at a time and one thing led to another. Through the group I met an editor, who referred me to a copy editor, who helped me get it published”.
“Then as he got older we had the conversation about it. But even my family cannot believe that me of all people have written a steamy novel, because they’re the ones who can sit around a table and talk about anything and everything and I’m the one who goes red and walks away. While Jillian hails from Stamullen in Co. Meath, she’s an Irish Carrie Bradshaw and took inspiration for some of the characters from her own dating life.
