Updates on jockey Michael O'Sullivan's condition after a fall at Thurles racecourse. Fellow jockey Ruby Walsh expresses hope for O'Sullivan's recovery.
Ruby Walsh expressed the sentiments shared by the racing community and the wider public when he wished Michael O'Sullivan well as he remained in intensive care. The talented jockey was airlifted to Cork University Hospital following a serious fall at Thurles on Thursday, leading to the abandonment of the race meeting. O'Sullivan, riding Wee Charlie for Gerard O'Leary, was one of three riders involved in a fall at the last in the two-mile Racing Again February 20th Handicap Chase.
Two other runners were also badly hampered, unseating their riders. Walsh was a guest on ITV's The Opening Show on Saturday, which started with the program's participants extending their thoughts and support to the Cheltenham Festival-winning rider and his family. Host Oli Bell stated: 'We are very much sending our prayers and love to Michael and his family.' Walsh added: 'He's in Cork University Hospital. He's fighting, breathing, very fit, very strong and he needs a bit of luck and hopefully he gets it.' Dr Jennifer Pugh, the IHRB's Chief Medical Officer, provided an update on the jockey on Friday morning. In a statement released on X, she said: 'Michael is in the intensive care unit at Cork University Hospital being treated for his injuries sustained at Thurles yesterday and is receiving the best medical care. 'Michael's family wish to express their gratitude for all the well wishes.'
