Michael Owen has been a close friend of Sir Alex Ferguson since his three-year spell at Manchester United, and the pair are still in regular contact over on and off-field matters
Former Manchester United forward Michael Owen is eager to reconnect with his old manager, Sir Alex Ferguson – but the hopeful reunion has nothing to do with football.
Since retiring at Stoke in 2013, Owen has become more deeply involved in owning and breeding horses. The 45-year-old maintains contact with 13-time Premier League-winner Ferguson due to their mutual interest, and it's a goal of his to give his former boss a top-class runner in future. "I'm just desperate for a bloody good horse for us to train for him. That would be nice because the Liverpool lads have had incredible luck. They've had a lot of success and the Brighton lads now are having a lot of luck. I'd like to have a really nice one for Sir Alex as well. That'd be great."
Ferguson, 83, enjoyed an exceptional run in the horse racing scene in 2024. He took home consecutive wins at Cheltenham and made history when Spirit Dancer bagged the Bahrain International Trophy for a second straight year – and with it, a tidy £800,000 prize.
