A commercial aircraft operated by Bering Air has disappeared over Alaska, prompting a major search and rescue operation. Ten individuals, including the pilot, were on board the plane when it lost communication while flying from Unalakleet to Nome. Authorities are facing challenges due to severe weather conditions, hampering aerial search efforts. Rescue teams are conducting ground searches and are working to determine the last known location of the aircraft. The incident raises concerns about aviation safety and the risks posed by unpredictable weather in remote areas.

A frantic search is underway for a commercial airplane that vanished during its flight. A full-scale operation has been launched to locate the Bering Air aircraft that lost communication while flying over Alaska in the United States. Ten individuals, including the pilot, were on board the missing jetliner, which was scheduled to land in Nome , a remote coastal town in Alaska .

However, it was declared 'overdue' after failing to arrive on schedule from Unalakleet, another town within the same state, according to reports from the Mirror. Rescue teams are actively trying to pinpoint the last known position of the aircraft, but appalling weather conditions have severely hindered any chances of conducting aerial searches. A statement from the Nome Volunteer Fire Department reads: 'We are currently responding to a report of a missing Bering Air caravan. We are conducting an active ground search from Nome and from White Mountain. Due to weather and visibility, we are limited on air search at the current time. National Guard and Coast Guard and Troopers have been notified and are active in the search. Norton Sound Health Corporation is standing by.' Even a Federal Aviation Administration weather camera near Nome showed what appeared to be whiteout conditions on Thursday afternoon, as reported by Alaska's News Source. Authorities have urgently advised community members against starting independent search operations considering the perilous conditions at present. Unalakleet, the town where the ill-fated plane departed, is a small coastal community on the westernmost part of Alaska. 'We ask the public to please think of those who may be missing at this time, but due to weather and safety concerns please do not form individual search parties. Families are encouraged to seek support at Norton Sound Health Corporation,' the department stated. Authorities have said their last contact with the pilot was when he communicated with Anchorage Air Traffic Control about his intention to 'enter a holding pattern' while awaiting clearance for the flight path. The Alaska State Troopers released a statement saying: 'AST was contacted by AKRCC in reference to an overdue aircraft. It was reported a Bering Air Caravan had gone missing while en route from Unalakleet to Nome, with 9 passengers and 1 pilot on board. SAR crews are working to get to the last known coordinates. Updates to follow.' Nome, steeped in history as a famous Gold Rush town near the Arctic Circle, is renowned as the finish line for the grueling 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Bering Air, an Alaskan commercial airline, has been contacted for comment. This incident in Alaska comes just a week after the harrowing news of 67 individuals perishing when an American Airlines jet collided midair with a Black Hawk Army helicopter over the Potomac River in Washington DC
