A Bering Air Caravan with 10 people on board disappeared during a flight over Alaska. Rescue teams are searching for the aircraft, but poor weather conditions are hindering efforts. Authorities are urging the public not to conduct independent searches.
An intense search is underway for a commercial aircraft that disappeared during its flight. A full-scale operation has been launched to find the Bering Air aeroplane that lost communication while flying over Alaska in the United States.
Ten individuals, including the crew member at the helm, were on board the missing jetliner, which was slated to land in Nome, a secluded coastal town in Alaska, but was declared 'overdue' after not arriving on schedule from Unalakleet, located within the same state. Rescue teams are currently making efforts to pinpoint the last known position of the aircraft, although the appalling weather conditions have significantly hampered any chances of conducting aerial searches. \A statement from the Nome Volunteer Fire Department reads: 'We are currently responding to a report of a missing Bering Air caravan. We are doing an active ground search from Nome and from White Mountain. Due to weather and visibility, we are limited on air search at the current time. National Guard and Coast Guard and Troopers have been notified and are active in the search. Norton Sound Health Corporation is standing by.' Even a Federal Aviation Administration weather camera in the vicinity of Nome showed what looked like whiteout conditions on Thursday afternoon, reported Alaska’s News Source. Authorities have urgently advised community members against starting independent search operations given the perilous conditions at present. Unalakleet, from where the ill-fated plane departed, is a minute coastal locality on the Western extremity of Alaska. 'We ask the public to please think of those who may be missing at this time, but due to weather and safety concerns please do not form individual search parties. Families are encouraged to seek support at Norton Sound Health Corporation,' the department stated. \Authorities have said their last contact with the pilot was when he communicated with Anchorage Air Traffic Control about his intention to 'enter a holding pattern' whilst waiting for the pathway to be cleared. The Alaska State Troopers released a statement, saying: 'AST was contacted by AKRCC in reference to an overdue aircraft. It was reported a Bering Air Caravan had gone missing while en route from Unalakleet to Nome, with 9 passengers and 1 pilot on board. SAR crews are working to get to the last known coordinates. Updates to follow.' Nome, steeped in history as a famed Gold Rush town near the Arctic Circle, is renowned as the finishing line for the gruelling 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Bering Air, an Alaskan commercial airline, has been contacted for comment. The episode in Alaska unfolds just a week after the harrowing news of 67 individuals perishing when an American Airlines jet collided midair with a Black Hawk Army helicopter over the Potomac River in Washington DC
