Twitter was awash with people predicting a furious response to this Alan Partridge clip last night. Fast-forward to this afternoon, and we’re (thankfully) still awaiting any substantial fury.

Disgusting to see this pro IRA stance taken by the BBC. I will be writing to the Director General to make the point that the IRA were terrorists and to put them on a pedestal like this is akin to glorifying the acts of ISIS.— Ian Paisley MP March 18, 2019 Source: Ian Paisley MP/Twitter

If you haven’t caught it yet and are wondering what all the fuss is about, the sequence in question plays out at the end of the show Partridge is presenting. An Irish folk singer, also played by Partridge creator Steve Coogan, hijacks the remaining airtime and proceeds to belt out an unrelenting medley of increasingly controversial ballads.

His best known creation – an unimaginably inept TV presenter who, in this latest series, has made an inexplicable return to the Beeb to co-present an inane daytime magazine show – never seems to fare particularly well in encounters with the Irish, but the joke is always on Partridge. Steve Coogan has made Alan Partridge react nervously and/or shocked, as most brits usually would with the mention of ‘black and tans’, ‘ira’ and ‘men behind the wire’. While also impersonating a man called Martin, an Alan Partridge doppelgänger. That’s one smart comedic cookie pic.twitter.com/jWFlx4UniJPartridge’s sole cinema outing, Alpha Papa, also features a disgruntled Irish radio host played by Colm Meaney who stages a siege at a Norwich radio station.
