The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak in parts of Africa a public health emergency of international concern
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, was discovered in the 1970s. It is highly contagious viral disease and scientists are concerned at how fast the new variant of the disease is spreading.
Sweden confirmed its first cast of the more contagious variant of mpox which is noted as the first time it has been found outside of Africa. The person was infected while in Africa where there was a large outbreak and travelled back to Sweden.READ MORE :'We didn't know our son had Down syndrome until after he was born. There are two types, known as ‘clades’. Clade I was once known as the Congo Basin clade, and clade II as the West African clade. Both can be fatal, although clade I historically has a higher death rate. It is reported that four in 100 cases lead to death, according to the BBC. Those with HIV or compromised immune systems are at greater risk for developing more serious complications.
With the declaration of mpox it is hoped that there will be a drive in research, funding, and other public health measures.There are vaccines but access is the issue.
