He was found guilty of murder in May 2008 after a trial at Leeds Crown Court.

Hill, now aged 62, must comply with “strict” licence conditions which include him living at a “designated address”. He said: “The killing of this elderly woman living alone and in these circumstances caused widespread shock. Hill ran a toy stall at Castleford market before going into partnership with Mrs Wright’s card stall following the death of her husband in early 2006.

Court of Appeal judges refused to admit the evidence and dismissed Hill’s application but said they found that the new evidence was “capable of belief”. Mr Brown claimed he had new evidence, including witnesses who said they saw another man outside the property carrying what looked like a heavy object in a plastic bag around the time Mrs Wright was killed.
