Concerns about 'clinical risks' associated with winter migration have led to a potential postponement of the full operational launch of Ireland's National Children's Hospital. While construction is nearing completion, the hospital may not fully open until 2026.
The long-awaited National Children's Hospital in Ireland may face further delays, with a projected full opening date of 2026. Despite substantial completion of construction being targeted for June 2025 , concerns about ' clinical risks ' associated with winter migration have led to a cautious approach. Children's Health Ireland (CHI) has advised against moving critical patient services during the colder months, prompting a potential postponement of the full operational launch.
The hospital project, which has already seen several completion date revisions, remains under the watchful eye of the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB). Ensuring the highest international standards across the 5,500 rooms and meticulous completion of medical equipment installation are top priorities for the board. While construction progress is at 94% completion, the NPHDB focuses on meticulous finishing and commissioning to ensure a safe and efficient environment for young patients. David Gunning, chief officer of the NPHDB, previously expressed reservations about meeting the June 2025 deadline, highlighting the need for a detailed analysis before providing assurances. Sinn Féin health spokesperson David Cullinane echoed these concerns, pointing to a recurring pattern of missed deadlines. He questioned the board's confidence in achieving the June target, particularly considering the lack of updates on progress made since their last committee appearance. The project's total budget has now reached €2.24 billion, encompassing construction, integration, commissioning, and the implementation of an Electronic Health Record system and ICT infrastructure. A significant portion (€1.8 billion) is dedicated to the capital construction projects, while €360 million is allocated to integration, commissioning, and ICT/Electronic Health Record costs. As the project enters its final stages, the focus remains on ensuring a safe, efficient, and world-class facility for all children requiring specialized medical care
