While it's unknown if Nicolas Cage will ever return to the NationalTreasure franchise, Disney has announced Justin Bartha will reprise his role as Riley Poole in the upcoming Disney+ series.
Justin Bartha, who played Riley Poole in the two National Treasure movies, is set to return in the franchise's upcoming Disney+ TV show. The first two films starred Nicolas Cage, Diane Krueger, and Bartha. The original National Treasure saw the crew racing to find a Templar treasure, while the second involved Cage's Benjamin Gates trying to prove his ancestor wasn't connected to Abraham Lincoln's assassination.
Even though the odds of getting a third film don't look good, Disney announced back in May 2020 that the National Treasure franchise will be expanding with a TV series on Disney+. The show will star newcomer Lisette Alexis as Jess Morales, a Latina adventurer who is searching for her family's connection to a lost Pan-American treasure.
This most recent casting announcement will surely spark debate over whether Nicolas Cage will return to National Treasure or not. The actor has remained skeptical over the years about National Treasure 3 happening, which makes sense since Disney is more focused on turning the franchise into a successful TV series. If Cage did return, he likely wouldn't have a leading role since Alexis is the star of the series.
For now though, the addition of Bartha is exciting enough as it solidifies the series in the same universe as the movies. Bartha's casting could even lead to Cage and/or Kreuger returning in a future season. Many were skeptical about a National Treasure TV show without Cage since his character was the highlight of both films, but any connection to the first two movies will bode well for the series.
