A Ryanair Boeing 737 flight and a Cessna C-172 training aircraft came close to colliding at Cork Airport last summer. Air traffic control cleared both aircraft for takeoff on intersecting runways within two minutes of each other. The incident, which occurred on July 26, 2022, was averted when the training aircraft made a sharp right turn after takeoff. The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) is investigating the incident.

A passenger flight and a training aircraft were involved in a 'near-miss' incident at Cork Airport last summer, sparking a major investigation.

At one point, the aircraft were less than 100 feet in distance apart at altitude, according to a report on the event from the State's air traffic management provider AirNav Ireland. The report into the incident from AirNav Ireland states the C-172 was on a training flight from Waterford to Cork Airport on Friday, July 26 last year. The plan was to do a “touch and go” where the aircraft lands and takes off without making a full stop.

The air traffic control instructed the Cessna to “breach right” away from the Ryanair plane. The training aircraft took a hard right, flying east away from danger, as the Ryanair flight rolled through the intersecting runways on take-off.
