Almost 100 newly graduated Gardaí will be deployed to Dublin in a bid to combat street crime during St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

Garda authorities are deploying nearly 100 newly graduated officers to bolster police presence in Dublin , strategically timed for the St. Patrick's Day festivities. The Irish Mirror has learned that approximately two-thirds of the latest recruit class to complete training at the Garda training college in County Tipperary will be assigned to Dublin . This move signifies a major initiative to combat street crime in the city.

Sources reveal that 98 out of the 150 new officers will be stationed in the capital, commencing their duties on St. Patrick's weekend. Furthermore, it has been revealed that the majority of these newly appointed Dublin Gardaí will be concentrated in two central city stations notorious for high instances of street crime. Specifically, 31 new officers will be deployed to Pearse Street on the south side of the city, while 29 will be stationed at Store Street on the north side. Both stations cover the inner city area of Dublin, which has been grappling with low-level street crime for several years. The remaining 38 Gardaí assigned to Dublin will be dispersed throughout the rest of the county, stretching from Balbriggan in the north to Clondalkin in the west and Dun Laoghaire in the south. All officers will enjoy a week-long break following their graduation this Friday before commencing their duties on St. Patrick's weekend, which is traditionally the busiest policing weekend of the year. Hundreds of thousands of people are anticipated to flock to the city to celebrate the patron saint's day. This influx of visitors places a significant strain on Garda resources, and the new officers will be thrown into the thick of things as they assist in policing the capital during this momentous weekend. In a separate development, 52 additional officers graduating from Templemore Garda College in Tipperary this Friday will be deployed to various stations across Ireland. Sources indicate that the concentration of new officers in Dublin is a part of a concerted effort by Garda Assistant Commissioner Paul Cleary, who oversees policing in Dublin, to clamp down on street crime. Commissioner Cleary, who assumed the top Garda post in Dublin late last year, has stated that his primary objective is to address street crime. He has expressed his belief that increased Garda visibility in the capital will contribute to a greater sense of safety for both residents and tourists. He has already formulated a comprehensive plan, in collaboration with Commissioner Drew Harris, to combat street crime, and the new officers are a crucial component of this strategy. Commissioner Cleary emphasized to the Sunday Times last week, 'I want my members on the ground to tackle public disorder, street drug-dealing, aggressive begging, aggressive shoplifting, and low-level crime more robustly.' He has also directed Gardaí in Dublin to adopt a tougher stance towards street gangs, including shoplifting syndicates.Concerns about crime in Dublin persist, particularly regarding street violence, following several high-profile incidents in recent weeks. Just last week, a teenager who assaulted US tourist Stephen Termini, 58, in central Dublin in July 2023, was sentenced to 20 months in prison. This marked the third teenager to be punished for the attack
