Thousands of Irish families will receive a new €280 social welfare payment, the Newborn Baby Grant, starting today to provide financial assistance to parents of newborns. The grant, announced by Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary, is paid in addition to the first month's Child Benefit payment.

Thousands of families in Ireland are set to receive a new €280 social welfare payment, known as the Newborn Baby Grant , starting today. This payment, announced by Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary , is designed to provide financial support to parents of newborns. Over 4,400 families are expected to benefit from this initiative in the coming weeks. The grant will be paid to parents of children born on or after 1 December 2024 who are eligible for Child Benefit from birth.

All eligible parents have been notified about the new grant. From March onwards, parents will receive the Newborn Baby Grant alongside the first month's Child Benefit payment. This means that the first payment for new parents will be worth €420, consisting of the €280 New Baby Grant and the first month's €140 Child Benefit. The grant is a one-time payment of €280 per child, and families with twins will receive €560. Child Benefit is a monthly payment made to the parents or guardians of children under 16. To qualify for Child Benefit, individuals must be living in Ireland and meet the Habitual Residence Condition (HRC). The payment is also available for children aged 16, 17, and 18 who are engaged in full-time education. The Department of Social Protection typically pays Child Benefit to the child's mother or stepmother. However, exceptions exist for fathers or stepfathers who are the primary caregivers, or in cases where the child resides between two households. Child Benefit is a universal payment, meaning it is available regardless of income or social insurance (PRSI) record. Payments are made on the first Tuesday of each month. For first-time applicants who have recently had a baby, the initial payment will be issued at the beginning of the month following the child's birth
