People around the country who meet certain conditions will be able to avail of a grant worth €280, which started in December 2024 and will continue throughout this year

A Newborn Baby Grant, in addition to the first month of Child Benefit of €140, will be paid to children born on or after 1 December 2024.

To get the grant, you must qualify for Child Benefit, which is a monthly payment to the parents or guardians of children under 16.You can also get Child Benefit for children aged 16, 17 and 18 if they:The Department of Social Protection pays Child Benefit to the child’s mother or stepmother. However, if you are the child’s father or stepfather, you can get the payment if the child does not live with their mother or step-mother.

Child Benefit is €140 a month for each child. It is a ‘universal’ payment. This means you can get it regardless of your income and social insurance record.If you have never received Child Benefit before and then you have a baby, you’ll get your first payment at the start of the month after your child is born. Since 1 December, the first payment made to new parents has been worth €420 - this includes a Newborn Baby Grant of €280, in addition to the first month of Child Benefit of €140.
