West Yorkshire Police have increased stop and search powers
Police have put out increased stop and search powers for Chapeltown and Harehills following a spike in machete attacks.
Following a detailed review of recent intelligence, the order is being extended from 9.45pm tonight to run until 8am tomorrow covering a wider area down to York Road and further along Harehills Lane. The new enforcement comes after at 7.07pm on Monday, police were contacted by the ambulance service who had been called to Reginald Row, Chapeltown, where two men had been attacked with a machete. The men, both aged 20, were taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening.
“Detectives from Leeds District CID are still working to establish the background to this incident, but we believe it is likely to be linked to rival groups involved in the supply of drugs. “I want to reassure people that we remain very firmly committed to working proactively to keep our communities safe, and I hope they will be supportive of the approach we are taking.
