A set of traffic lights in Northampton that break down as often as once a week are finally set to be replaced after a 7-year-campaign by a "tenacious" local councillor. The current system is over 30-years-old and can be disabled by a single spider.
, when NBC granted permission for developers to build flats on the Old Towcester Road, which is entered from the Old White Hart junction. The council and developers entered a Section 278 agreement, which said the developers would update the road and junction once work was complete. "The antiquated control board can be shut down by something as small as a spider getting in there," Cllr Davenport said. Extreme weather conditions, such as the recent heatwave, can also lead the system to shut down.
"They typically come within one or two days. If it's ever longer than that then they say they'll set up temporary lights." It also leads to drivers having to take dangerous decisions. "It's left to a 'he who is quickest or boldest' approach," said Davenport.
