Russian singers Julia Volkova and Lena Katina - better known as pop duo t.A.T.u - look completely different since they had a crack at winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2003

With Eurovision 2024 just weeks away, music fans will already know that Russia will not be back this year - but may be wondering what past contestants Julia Volkova and Lena Katina have been up to.

In May 2003, the ladies competed for music glory by representing Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest - but failed to win, finishing in third place behind winners Turkey and runners-up Belgium. In their pop heyday, Julia and Lena, both now 39, were notable for their short choppy black hair and frizzy long red locks respectively. Now the pair are almost unrecognisable as they have gone on to embrace slick makeovers, looking worlds away from the failed Eurovision contestants of 21 years ago.

She now sports a fuller pout, thicker eyebrows and much longer hair. Meanwhile, Lena has continued to pursue a career in music, releasing solo singles and her most recent EP, titled Mannequin, was released in April last year. However, they mended their damaged friendship and even revived their band in 2022 for a string of performances in Russia. The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest will again see Russia banned from entering following the invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
