It comes amid ongoing pleas from senior Gardaí and the Government for people to stop using devices while driving
The number of people detected using mobile phones while driving is already up 11 per cent on last year, Gardaí have confirmed to the Irish Mirror.
A Garda spokesman said: “Currently, there is an 11 per cent increase in mobile phone detections to end of June 2024, compared to same period 2023.” James Lawless, Minister of State with responsibility for road safety, told the Irish Mirror he was concerned about the rising number of people driving while using a mobile phone.“Put them away. We have seen a devastating increase in road trauma this year and now the research and statistics show that distraction, through the use of mobiles and apps while driving, is now a major issue.
“The latest figures show that the numbers of motorists on mobiles at the wheel are rising and this is of serious concern to me.”
