There is still too much confusion around the new rules - some of which will just never work

Last Friday was not a particularly good one for the Football Review Committee. First up was Conor Moore , who entertained the country with a skit on football’s new rules with ‘Ger Loughnane’ stealing the show once again - and blurring the lines between comedy and accurate commentary in doing so.

But things have changed hugely in the meantime. Donegal have probably overtaken Dublin as front runners for this year’s All-Ireland Ireland. I would not have liked to have been Oisin Gallen in that dressing room at half-time after his decision to reject the chance to take a tap-over free from the 20-metre line outside the arc, only to miss the two-point attempt with the last kick of the first half. When something like that happens so late in the half, it’s often the first thing that an irate manager will target at half-time.

For Mayo there are very few positives. But I would look at Davitt Neary and Conor Reid’s performances again in their half-forward line as something that Mayo can take from another defeat. A quick look at the fixtures this weekend just past and there were two games in football that are screaming out for drawing a crowd for Friday night. The All-Ireland champions Armagh against their neighbours Tyrone and Mayo-Galway .

For players, the chance to have a rare weekend off at this time of year would be hugely appealing too.
