Opinion: San Diego has seen runaway development plans like the Seaport Village replacement project before [Opinion]
In six years the infrastructure expenses have more than tripled and now 1HWY1, the developer, is seeking increased property taxes, sales taxes, Transit Occupancy Taxes and Tourism Marketing District taxes, Special District Hotel Taxes and Special District Entertainment Taxes. Wow.
In 2016 it wanted $150 million and now $550. It has not even placed a brick and the cost to taxpayers has risen more 300 percent. We taxpayers do not need to spend that kind of money to become the city of the future. We are not investing in San Diego, we are investing in 1HWY1 and whatever interests the Jacobs family has.
Taxpayers well know how that money could be well spent on many other needs we have: homelessness, infrastructure, schools, parks, streets, sidewalks, the drought to mention a few. We certainly need to look into bringing back redevelopment agencies so we can vote on major projects that affect all of us like the Ash Street fiasco.
