Gregor Chisholm: ‘We’re trying.’ Jays boot six-run lead and lose in Texas. Maybe they didn’t learn from last year after all
The blown six-run lead was the largest by the Jays in a regular-season loss since July 28, 2019 against Tampa Bay.“We just have to tighten things up, whether it’s on the mound or in the field,” Jays managersaid. “You score runs, you have a six-run lead, pitchers are going to have tough days — whether it’s Chris or guys out of the ’pen. It’s getting over to first base to cover, it’s making sure you make a good throw in. We’ll reconvene in Miami, talk about that stuff.
Through April, much of that came to fruition. The outfield defence was elite, the infield gloves weren’t too shabby either, and the Jays were making the most of their opportunities by moving runners over and coming up with timely hits. “This is baseball,” Guerrero said through an interpreter. “Of course you get upset, but it happens. Not just today, every time you lose a game it hurts, but you can’t put your head down. You have to keep fighting, keep going out there and trying to win every game. It hurts, but it’s not frustrating.”
Over the next two innings, the offence jumped all over Gray and extended the lead to six. It appeared the Jays were headed for their first blowout victory of the month. On a getaway day, it felt like the kind of game where both sides would be content to cruise to the finish. The Rangers had other plans, and the Jays assisted them almost every step of the way.
