New parents could get a payment worth €560 in the first month of a child's life under plans pitched by the Green Party
Budget 2025 is set to be announced in three weeks, with ministers deliberating on the measures they plan on rolling out.
Speaking on RTE’s Today with Claire Byrne on Monday, Mr O'Gorman said: “It's a proposal we'll be bringing forward to the budgetary negotiations over the next number of weeks. We're very aware of the extra financial pressures that all new parents face on the arrival of a newborn – New cot, new baby seat, new steriliser, all those really basic but quite expensive pieces of equipment.
Several sources confirmed to the Irish Mirror that the baby boost would be a matter for Heather Humphreys’ Department of Social Protection rather than Mr O’Gorman’s Department of Children. Sources said that there may be other priorities for the Social Protection budget. It is unclear whether or not this proposal will be considered.
