Former Sunday Game pundit Pat Spillane ignited debate on the Late Late Show with his candid assessment of Gaelic football, claiming the sport has lost its identity and urging a return to its traditional values.

Pat Spillane sparked controversy on Friday night's Late Late Show with his outspoken commentary on the current state of Gaelic football. The legendary Kerry player expressed his concerns for the sport he loves, hoping the new rules will breathe life back into the game. Spillane, who attended last year's All-Ireland final between Armagh and Galway, claimed the atmosphere was lacking during the match.

This assertion drew immediate backlash from fans, who labeled it a 'blatant lie' and accused the former Sunday Game pundit of 'talking nonsense'. Spillane elaborated on his critique, stating, 'I don't take anything away from Armagh, and it was brilliant to see Jarlath hugging his son at the end of the game because that's family. But I looked at the statistics for last year's All-Ireland football final. 97 kick passes, 592 hand passes. 500 more hand passes than kick passes, and you are saying Gaelic football? This is not Gaelic football at all, this is handball.' He further compared the game to a scene from Father Ted, saying, 'Do you remember when they brought the blasphemous film to Craggy Island and Dougal and Ted had a protest? I felt like taking Father Ted's placard from that day and walking across Croke Park with 'Down With This Sort Of Thing'.' Adding to the amusement, Spillane revealed he found himself more captivated by a seagull on the pitch than the actual match. He explained, 'The longer I was watching the game in the first half, I was drawn to the fact that there was a seagull on one side of the field. I got obsessed with the seagull. I Googled, 'are seagulls an intelligent bird?' It said seagulls are much smarter than you think, and in actual fact, seagulls are the most intelligent of all birds. This bird knew damn well because there was no danger of the ball being kicked down the other end of the field.' Despite the criticism, a number of fans rallied behind Spillane, agreeing with his assessment of the game's current state. They pointed to a decline in the spectacle and a shift towards a more possession-based style of play, advocating for a return to the classic, more direct approach.
