He cracked even more and looked close to tears, as he said: “It truly is an honour of a lifetime to be able to say welcome to the Late Late Show”. Instead, with the help of his guests - including fellow RTÉ hosts Tommy Tiernan and the 2 Johnnies, it became the running joke of the night - with the Tipperary podcast duo even teasing that they saw RTÉ bosses ripping up Kielty’s contract after watching his pointed jibes from the green room.
While the guest line-up had a bang of canteen candidates, heavily Irish and RTÉ staff led, the new Late Late has the look of American talk show and the looser feel similar to Jimmy Fallon’s show and the likes of Graham Norton across the pond. A quick trip to the audience to give away a prize also proved popular with those live in studio and those watching at home, as the presenter seemed to take inspiration from the late Gaybo, by mixing with the crowd in attendance.
