Dozens of supporters were in court as Sean Meehan, 67, was given the prison term but walked free soon after

A pensioner at loggerheads with his council has been given a four month prison sentence – for building a log cabin on his own land without planning permission .

Mr Meehan, of Woodinstown, Cahir, Co Tipperary, was handed down the sentence for failing to comply with a council direction from December 2022 to pull down the cabin that he had built without planning permission. He also said that Mr Meehan had tried to get retrospective planning permission, which was refused. He had appealed to An Bord Pleanala, but he failed in that bid.

But handing down the sentence, Judge O’Shea said: “Politics and law are two completely different things… It is a criminal offence that I am dealing with.”
