There were two arrests made by Gardaí during what some politicians described as an 'Intimidating' protest held to mark the first day of the new Dáil term.
Politicians were prevented from leaving Leinster House for nearly two hours on Wednesday evening as protestors prevented a convoy of cars from leaving the building by sitting on the ground.
Scenes became particularly fraught at around 4pm when protestors moved from Kildare Street where barricades had been erected to Merrion Street where there were no barriers put up.READ MORE: Leinster House protest LIVE: Tensions high and angry scenes on first day of new Dail term The politicians in the 14-car convoy were able to exit at around 5:45pm. As they drove down Merrion Square past the gallows, protestors could be heard shouting, “You’ll never beat the Irish”.
Pictures and videos showed politicians cornered, with one video posted on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, showing Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae being escorted down Kildare Street by Gardaí.
