President wants to underline the distinction between being critical of the State of Israel and anti-Semitic expression
President Michael D Higgins has distinguished views he has expressed where he has criticised the State of Israel as being completely different to anti-Semite remarks.
President Higgins raised some eyebrows on Wednesday when he said that the bombing of a Palestinian hospital in Gaza should be investigated as a potential war crime. Speaking to reporters after their meeting, President Higgins said: “I think it’s incredibly important at this stage as we move on now from the horrific, horrific events that have taken place that we be absolutely unequivocal about anti-Semitic expression.
“If you’re criticising the State of Israel for illegal settlements as some of us have in the past, it’s entirely wrong to be describing that as anti-Semitic behaviour."
