We're sitting in the foyer of the Lord Bagenal Hotel in Carlow. Deep in the heart of Mullins country. Just before we start to talk, a lady approaches Patrick Mullins from behind and taps him on the shoulder to say hello. They step away for a few moments and she embraces him in a way like he might be her own son. They chat briefly before she leaves and Patrick sits back down to speak. “You’ll never guess who that was?,” he says. “That’s Ronan’s mother”.

Bizarrely, Ronan is who we’re here to talk about. Some 14 years ago Patrick’s best friend, up-and-coming jockey Ronan Lawlor, was tragically killed in a freak accident on the gallops of trainer Pat Fahy’s yard. It happened less than a kilometre from where we sit, in Fahy’s Ellen Lodge Stables in Leighlinbridge. Dylan was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick following the collision before being moved to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin where he sadly passed away on Wednesday morning.
