Homes have been left without water and businesses have had to close amid town centre chaos
Residents and businesses have spoken of their frustration after a burst water main left roads flooded and homes without water in Bury. Locals say the pipe began leaking on Hornby Street in the early hours today .
Donna Ball, executive director at Bury Council said on Twitter the issue was affecting 'many homes and businesses.' She said she anticipated 'normal business' by lunchtime. However, the issue has been ongoing for a number of hours now as United Utilities posted an update at 3.30pm to say 'repairs to the burst' are still underway. One business close to Bury Town Centre said their premise had no water during it's opening hours.
One person told the MEN: "It's horrid walking through this - you'd have thought it's been pouring with rain. Hopefully they get this fixed sooner rather than later." A United Utilities spokesperson, said: “The teams isolated the burst pipe to stop the water earlier today and they have been making good progress on repairs. We expect these will be completed shortly, allowing us to bring the pipe back into service tonight.
