Yes, Tory members are a small and rum bunch by demographic. But they also hear the responses of family members and neighbours and the worries that Truss could, according to one senior former Cabinet minister, end up with a “10 per cent” chance of election victory. Sunak wants to rise above the “Liz will lose it”, internecine warfare, focussing instead on the national picture. But he also needs to remind Tory members that it will be their responsibility if she wins the race and blows up.
That message has a policy point to it. Rural and small-town poverty is under-weighted in the national debate. But raising it in one of the most affluent towns in the South East was an own goal and Sunak’s wriggling shows he knew it. Running for leadership from a Cabinet position is however essentially about denouncing the family you have just been part of, without looking like a turncoat.
